Hamilton wins truck race at Mansfield

Bobby Hamilton captured the UAW-GM Ohio 250 Craftsman Truck Series event at the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway. The No.04 Dodge driver crossed the finish line one truck length ahead of runner-up Jack Sprague. The victory was Hamilton's second of the season and 10th of his truck career. Pole winner Ron Hornaday Jr. in the No.6 Chevrolet was the dominant driver at the beginning of the race. Hornaday Jr. took four tires on the first pit stop on lap 80 with a one-pit strategy in mind. Meanwhile, Shane Hmiel in the No.15 Chevrolet driver, decided not to pit on lap 80. Hmiel, who was in third at the time, moved to the front of the pack by staying out. Hmiel continued to lead while Hornaday Jr. fought his way through the field trying to regain his number one spot. Rick Crawford, the second-place driver, trailed Hmiel by 1.729 seconds at the halfway point of the race. Hornaday Jr. took the lead back on lap 142 when Hmiel and many of the other drivers, including Sprague, made their final pit stops. Hamilton, Sprague, and Hmiel all battled behind Hornaday Jr. who at the time seemed to have the race in control. But on a caution restart on lap 180 Hornaday Jr. was black flagged in a questionable call for jumping the restart. His penalty was he had to drive through pit lane at 30 m.p.h. This penalty dropped him to 24th and a later penalty in the pits ruined his hopes of winning the race. Hornaday Jr. finished the race in 11th. The Hornaday Jr. penalty also gave Hamilton the lead as Sprague and Hmiel battled it out behind him. As the laps dwindled down to just a few, Hamilton continued to lead. With eight laps to go Hamilton owned a 0.832-second lead over Sprague. A late caution flag came out with seven to go because of a multi-car crash. This set the stage for an exciting green-white-checkered finish. On lap 253 the race restarted and Hamilton jumped to a quick lead. On the final lap it was Hamilton crossing the finish line just ahead of Sprague and Hmiel. Todd Kluever and Rich Bickle completed the top-five. With Hamilton's win the Nashville, TN native leads the point standings with 968 points. Ted Musgrave (923) trails by 45 points and Ricky Craven (895) trails by 73 markers. The next event in the Craftsman Truck Series is set for Friday, May 20th at the Lowe's Motor Speedway.
