The San Francisco Giants claimed outfielder Alex Sanchez off waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Thursday.
Sanchez was designated for assignment by the Devil Rays on June 13 despite hitting .346 with two homers, 13 RBI and 28 runs scored in 43 games. He is expected to join the club for its weekend series in Oakland.
The first player to be suspended by Major League Baseball for violating the league's new steroid policy, Sanchez has a career average of .297 with six homers, 108 RBI and 120 stolen bases.
