Cubs activate Prior off DL; Wood next

The Chicago Cubs activated pitcher Mark Prior off the 15-day disabled list Sunday and he pitched six innings of one-hit ball to record the victory in a 2-0 series-finale triumph against the cross-town White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Prior had been sidelined since May 28 with a non-displaced fracture of his right elbow, an injury sustained the previous day when he was hit with a line drive off the bat of Colorado's Brad Hawpe. Initial X-rays were negative, but an MRI exam revealed the fracture and it was originally determined that Prior could miss up to eight weeks of action. He returned sooner than expected and was throwing off a mound in simulated games over the past couple of weeks. "I just tried to go out there and throw a good game," said Prior. "I felt pretty good." On Sunday the 24-year-old righthander gave up just a two-out single to Pablo Ozuna in the third inning, then retired the final 10 batters he faced. He did not walk a batter and struck out three, throwing 71 pitches. "You're not going to win games when you only get one hit," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen about Prior's performance. Prior improved to 5-1 with a 2.66 earned run average in 10 starts this year. He began the 2005 season on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. The Cubs opened a roster spot by optioning pitcher Rich Hill to Triple-A Iowa. Hill had appeared in three games since being recalled June 15 and posted no record with a 4.76 ERA and nine strikeouts in just 5 2/3 innings. Chicago is also expected to have Kerry Wood back in the rotation this week, scheduling the oft-injured righthander to start Wednesday's game against Milwaukee. Wood was placed on the disabled May 3 with a muscle strain in his right shoulder. He has not pitched in the majors since May 1, but has been on a rehab assignment at Iowa, working on his mechanics. In five big league starts this season, Wood is 1-1 with a 6.15 ERA and 33 strikeouts.
