Boston Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday.
Ramirez earned his second weekly honor of the season and the 13th of his career by having an outstanding week. The left fielder had five homers in six games, batting .407 with 15 runs batted in, 27 total bases and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
The eight-time All-Star helped Boston to a 6-0 mark last week. In a three-game interleague series against Philadelphia, Ramirez homered in each game and recorded nine RBI. On Sunday, Ramirez clubbed his 19th career grand slam to tie Eddie Murray for second on the all-time list. Lou Gehrig leads with 23.
Others considered for the award were Gary Sheffield of the New York Yankees, Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians and Nick Swisher, Rich Harden and Danny Haren of the Oakland Athletics.
