Pittsburgh Pirates ace Oliver Perez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a broken left big toe.
Perez suffered the injury following his start on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals when he kicked a laundry cart in the clubhouse. The 23-year-old lefthander suffered a no-decision in his team's 5-4 extra inning win, as he allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings.
In 15 starts this season, Perez has posted a 6-5 mark to go along with a 6.16 earned run average. Perez, though, has recorded wins in five of his last six decisions after losing four of his first five.
Taking Perez's spot on the roster will be outfielder Nate McLouth, who has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. In 74 games with the Indians, McLouth hit .306 (78-for-255) with 12 doubles, five home runs, 32 RBI and a team-leading 23 stolen bases.
McLouth is expected to be with the team Tuesday night in Washington for the opener of a three-game set at RFK Stadium.
