Pujols continues to pace NL in All-Star voting

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols continues to lead all National League vote-getters in the latest balloting results released Tuesday, although his lead over Chicago's Derrek Lee is starting to shrink, as both vie to start the 76th All-Star Game on July 12 at Comerica Park. Pujols, who has garnered 1,714,179 votes, is hitting .337 with 20 home runs, 64 RBI. Lee, meanwhile, is also putting up Triple Crown numbers, batting .388 with 22 home runs, 64 RBI, but trails Pujols by 59,912 votes. Another tight race remains at shortstop where Los Angeles' Cesar Izturis (940,944) continues to hold a slight edge over St. Louis' David Eckstein (896,531). New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza (1,173,789) continues to lead at his position, while teammate Carlos Beltran (1,316,894) fell behind fellow outfielders Bobby Abreu (1,389,211) of Philadelphia and Jim Edmonds (1,332,002) of St. Louis Abreu, who is hitting .321 with 17 homers, 51 RBI and 18 stolen bases, was sixth when the first round of balloting results were released. Second baseman Jeff Kent (1,334,686) of the Dodgers and third baseman Scott Rolen (1,289,903) of St. Louis remain in first place at their positions. The starters for this year's All-Star Game will be announced on Sunday, July 3.
