Twenty-three year old Danica Patrick captured the pole for Sunday's Argent Mortgage Indy 300 at the Kansas Speedway. The No.16 Honda-powered racer circled the 1.5-mile oval in 25.4905 seconds (214.668 m.p.h.).
The pole victory was the first of Patrick's eight-race, IndyCar career. Patrick becomes just the second woman to start on an IndyCar pole (Sarah Fisher - 2002 Kentucky).
"I'm excited, the team is very strong," said Patrick. "We all work hard together. We definitely redeemed ourselves from Richmond."
Patrick started a disappointing 21st at Richmond, but rallied to finish 10th.
Starting on the front row with Patrick will be her Rahal/Letterman teammate Buddy Rice, who posted a second-best time of 25.4927 seconds. Rice won last year's race at the Kansas Speedway.
"We just need to make it to the end (of the race)," said Rice, who has failed to crack the top-10 in his last two starts. "I think we'll make it to the podium if we just make it to the end."
A third Rahal/Letterman driver, Vitor Meira (25.5050), will start third alongside Tomas Scheckter (25.5054).
"I got every little drop out of the car," said Scheckter.
Points leader Dan Wheldon will start 13th in the 22-car field. The Andretti/Green Racing driver holds an 83-point lead over Tony Kanaan (292-209), who will start eighth on the grid.
The race is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 1:45 p.m
