Abreu named NL Player of the Week

Philadelphia Phillies leftfielder Bobby Abreu was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday after leading the league in seven offensive categories from May 9-15. Abreu led the NL in batting average (.583), home runs (6), runs batted in (12), slugging percentage (1.458), on-base percentage (.677), hits (14) and total bases (35). The well-rounded lefthanded hitter homered in six of Philadelphia's seven games during the week, including five straight, which tied a franchise record held by Dick Allen and Mike Schmidt. For the season, the 31-year-old Abreu is batting .331 with 10 home runs, 28 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 27 runs scored. Other nominees for the award included three members of the Houston Astros -- third baseman Morgan Ensberg and starting pitchers Roger Clemens and Brandon Backe.
