Argentina, Spain post wins at World Team event

Clay-court powerhouses Argentina and Spain were Monday's winners in the round-robin portion of the ATP World Team Championship. The 2002 champion Argentines got singles wins from French Open champ Gaston Gaudio and Roland Garros runner-up Guillermo Coria to top France 2-1 in Red Group play, while Spain used a singles victory by David Ferrer and a doubles win by Tommy Robredo and Santiago Ventura to best Sweden 2-1 in the Blue Group. Gaudio got the Argentines going with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Frenchman Arnaud Clement, and Coria followed by besting Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-4 on the red clay at Rochusclub. The French pulled out a point when their duo of Clement and Llodra handled an Argentine pairing of Guillermo Canas and Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 6-4. The Spaniards fell behind the Swedes when Thomas Johansson surprised Robredo 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, but the favorites came from behind when Ferrer leveled Jonas Bjorkman 6-4, 6-0 and a doubles tandem of Robredo and Ventura overcame a Swedish duo of Bjorkman and Johansson 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-3. The other four nations represented at this final French Open tuneup are two- time defending champion Chile (1-0), the Czech Republic (0-1), the United States (0-1) and the host Germans (1-0). The Chileans defeated Australia in last year's final.
