Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Eric Warfield has been suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2005 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
The Kansas City Star posted on its Web site Tuesday that a spokesman for Warfield confirmed the suspension.
The 29-year-old Warfield, a seventh-round pick of the Chiefs in the 1998 NFL draft, pleaded no contest in January to driving under the influence of alcohol following a September arrest in Overland Park, KS. He was sentenced in March to 10 days in jail followed by 80 days of house arrest.
Warfield, who has already served the jail time, started 16 games at cornerback for Kansas City in 2004, finishing with 57 tackles (49 solo), eight passes defended and two forced fumbles. His four interceptions last season tied safety Greg Wesley for the team lead.
During his previous eight NFL seasons, which have been spent entirely with the Chiefs, Warfield has recorded 292 tackles and 19 interceptions in 104 games.
