University of Cincinnati men's basketball coach Bob Huggins will not receive a contract extension, but has said he will fulfill the remaining two years of his deal. Huggins had a rollover provision removed from his contract last summer after his drunk driving arrest. After meeting last week with school president Nancy Zimpher, the long-time coach had the option of taking a buyout or remaining with the Bearcats. "I was notified that my contract wouldn't be rolled over. I then have the option to retire or to continue to fill my contract. I plan on fulfilling my contract," Huggins said in a brief statement Monday night. "I love the players. I think I have an obligation to them, certainly to their families, and I think to the fans and the city of Cincinnati." Huggins was suspended with pay for two months last summer following his arrest and no contest plea. "People here have been unbelievable," he added. "They've supported me when I needed support and they've always been there. I believe in fulfilling obligations, so I fully intend on doing that." Huggins has a 399-127 record in 16 seasons at Cincinnati. His teams have made 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the Final Four in 1992. This past year, the Bearcats were knocked out of the tournament in the second round by Kentucky. "I've never asked them to re-do my contract," Huggins continued. "I've never asked for a raise. The university has always come to me and been very gracious, and for that I'm thankful. It's my understanding that nobody in the athletic department is being extended until a time when we have a new athletic director and he can evaluate and do what it is that he does." Current athletic director Bob Goin has planned to retire next year. "I have full confidence and I've got a lot of belief in this university. If I didn't, I wouldn't have two daughters here. I certainly wouldn't have stayed here as long as I've stayed. I have every confidence that everything will work out fine as it always has." Cincinnati will leave Conference USA for the Big East next season.
