A year after a tumultuous training camp—which included the daily struggles of JaMarcus Russell and allegations of assault and domestic assault against head coach Tom Cable—the Raiders spent a serene month in the wine country to sort it all out.
Russell is gone, released after three years and zero progress toward validating his status as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2007 draft. Cable kept his coaching job but relinquished offensive coordinator and play-calling duties, concentrating on the overall picture.

Raiders go with rookie center (AP) - The Oakland Raiders already have a new quarterback this season. Now they have a new starting center, too. Rookie Jared Veldheer spent nearly all of training camp practicing at left tackle but beat out incumbent Samson Satele after moving to center and will be in the starting lineup when the Raiders open the season at Tennessee on Sept.

DE Jay Richardson among Raiders cuts (AP) - Coach Tom Cable called this year's roster cuts the most difficult in his four years with the Oakland Raiders. The most noteworthy of 21 initial cuts he made Saturday was defensive end Jay Richardson, who started much of his first two years in the NFL before being relegated to a reserve role last season.

Vikings ax Javon Walker; reportedly hunt T.J. Houshmandzadeh (SportingNews.com) - Two weeks after they signed him in a desperation move, the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday cut wide receiver Javon Walker. The move could be a signal the Vikings will pursue another wideout, possibly free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
